I get great joy from watching our chickens lead a quality life, they have access to a wonderful space. There are many shady spots in summer, under trees and behind the garden beds. Fresh water and a dry house. Their bedding is cleaned once a fortnight and fresh greens provided frequently. In winter I cook porridge and finely chopped garlic for them to eat. The garlic is so small that they cannot pick it out. I bought a Grandpa feeder a few years ago and fill it with grain . A mixture of grains to provide a complete diet. The mice are kept out of the feed, and training chickens to use it, makes me feel like I’m in the circus.
