Broken Eggs

by | Jun 25, 2014 | Chickens, In the Garden

Finally my new chickens started laying three weeks ago! I had been truly missing having my own eggs….but just as soon as they did lay, I started to find broken eggs with the yolks completely gone….I suspected the Ravens or Crows that perch on the nearby telephone line, as they are very clever. Last summer I left my collected eggs in a bowl outside and when I came back just half an hour later they were gone!….however on this occasion I found that when ever I paid a visit to the chicken run I never once spotted either of these bird species. So I began to suspect my oldest chicken. I decided to temporarily separate her from the others and placed her in one of my raised garden beds which is enclosed by wire. If in fact it was my oldest chicken eating the eggs then on my next egg collecting trip, I had hoped to find three freshly laid and perfectly in tact eggs. And I did…and not only did I find my eggs in perfect condition but I stumbled on my oldest chicken eating her own egg…. I suspect that she had discovered how delicious her eggs were by accident. In her old age her egg shells have thinned and the eggs she produces are very weak . Maybe one had broken easily and that is how her egg eating habits had begun.
